Drywall screws are sunk slightly below the surface of the wall so that they can be hidden under mud.Seams and corners are taped by applying a layer of mud, then pressing the tape into the mud, and then applying more mud over the tape. The mud is applied in progressively-wider coats.
Finally, the mud is sanded to achieve a smooth surface. It looks a bit odd in this state, but once the wall is painted, you'd never know that all this lies beneath.
