I got some initial permits covering the electrical wiring and drywall/insulation. This means it is time to get down and dirty. Taking the old kitchen apart was a a fairly straightforward affair. First I removed the upper cabinets by remove screws and prying out nails.
Next up, I used the shutoff valves to turn off water to the sink and dishwasher. Then I removed them and the lower cabinets.
With the cabinetry removed, I started taking out drywall. This is what I found behind the wall separating the kitchen from the living area. Turns out that it is a shear wall, and an important structural element of the house. More on this later.
Behind the drywall, I uncovered another unpleasant surprise. It looks like the termite guys missed some significant structural damage by the front window. Eww. The good news is that the damaged wood is in an area that I was planning to redo anyway. Eventually there should be a walk-out bay window in this spot. So no great harm done, hopefully.
With all the drywall removed from the front half of the house, I took some time to clean up. In preparation for the upcoming work on the CAD model, I brought my computer over and set it up in a corner. Internet access is already wired.
