Asbestos Begone!

In the process of tearing up carpet and poking around the house, I came across several indicators of asbestos.  9x9 flooring tiles that have been covered over rather than replaced are a classic clue.  Anyway, I took samples to the lab for analysis.  It isn't cheap, but neither is asbestos abatement.  Luckily, most of my samples turned up negative.  The tile flooring under the bedroom carpets and in one small section of the kitchen both tested positive.  There was also asbestos tape on some of the ductwork.

Asbestos removal doesn't really qualify as a do-it-yourself project, as only licensed professionals are legally allowed to do this work.  After getting several bids from contractors, I took the "low" bid of $1250 and let them get to work.  My wallet is lighter, but my house is now asbestos-free.

  2. I have no knowledge of the asbestos content of the old 9x9 tiles that I took out of my kitchen with the rest of the house sealed off, wearing a full body disposable suit and a P100 half-mask filter. No idea. From what I can tell, asbestos tiles aren't the most dangerous form especially if they're not breaking up completely. Hack cough.
